The power of music can be appreciated in the world of "theater". This would respectively include, movies, plays and the like. I would like to share a few of my favorite works of this art form. When we consider the language of music and then add in the visual effects, the journey becomes a symphony of emotional realizations. Through music, imagery assists perception and solidifies concepts. Without question, Imagery has a historical significance well beyond its years. With or without lyrics, music is already a generous progenitor of imagery. Powered by this copious array of imagery, music historically portrays a harmonious relationship between music and theater. Since time and eternity, culture has made good use of music and song as a means of communication and entertainment. Moreover, throughout the eons of time, memories were passed on from one generation to another via story telling through minstrel songs.
As we consider this concept, it comes as no surprise that our modern day entertainment is a culmination of our ancient musical artistry. So, it is understandable, that artists have perfected sound and vision in the "true splendor" of ancestral genius. Now days, we are enjoying the labors of years of talented artists that have created the supreme augmentation of our modern day communication called, "cinema".
For demonstration, when music is added to the visual arts, we immediately notice an accentuation or exaggeration of the subject at hand. Moreover, this advancement of the "theme" allows music to compel a discovery or just simply add to the entertainment. All together, the combination is nothing short of amazing. The following examples are treasured works of art that skillfully compel the journey and foster an experience not soon to be forgotten.
Sound of Music
Is a supreme entertainment and “treasure chest”of wonderful songs. It is a fantastic work of how music can lead the way and support the story.
"Climb Every Mountain"
West Side Story
Is a sociological asphyxiation of tragedy sewn within a tender love story. It is truly an emotional journey strengthen by the support of compelling music.
"Somewhere"
Phantom of the Opera
Is an addicting masterpiece of spellbinding captivation that is busting at the seams with authoritative intrigue. It is an alluring and seductive journey of compassion and love in the midst of a dark world of cruelty and rejection. This is a haunting and engaging musical truly past the point of no return.
"Theme song"
"The point of no return"
Lord of the Rings
Is an epic fantasy where the music connects with the emotions of the characters and advances the storyline of heroism, self-sacrifice and hope. It is a fantasy that entraps the imagination and embraces the courageous characters who struggle in the face of despair. The music underscores these emotions and challenges, thereby sharing in the journey.
"May it Be"
Mama Mia
Is entertainment at it's best with an abundance of expression and character bathed in laughter, joy and laden with unresolved issues. Music leads the way to happiness in a purely delightful example of musical power.
"The Winner Takes It All"
The music score, lyrics and sound are but a marriage to the visual. Actors bring their own power to the marriage. I will not attempt to compare that nuptial. I would like to emphasize, however, that we live in extraordinary times blessed with wondrous animated artwork and incredible special effects. Please take a moment to appreciate all the wonderful aspects of this journey we all share.
Till next time,
Kia
